Waiting for Its Cue {Five Minute Friday} #ChooseJoy

Five Minute Friday is Gypsy Mama’s weekly writing prompt…and edit-free exercise.

Today’s topic: Joy

Go.

The text read, “Just came home. Someone broke into my house. Totally ransacked.” My heart sank for my friend. The violation she must feel. The anger. The grief.

With dinner in tow, I approached her door slowly, recognizing the sobriety of this time. Like Tigger released from an afternoon nap in the Hundred Acre Wood, I was greeted by the biggest and most unexpected smile.  “You have to come see this!”

In fact, the room had been completely ransacked. Everything turned upside down. Inside out. Turned over. Spilled out.

In the middle of this mess, stood my friend proudly displaying discovered treasures she had forgotten—a picture of the girls when they were little, her boy’s napkin art, love letters from her husband. Things a thief would think are of no value, but the heart knows is priceless.

Joy is like that. When everything is turned upside down, inside out, turned over and spilled out, joy sneaks in. Joy speaks the priceless language of the heart. It paces in the out of the way, shadow places, when grief takes center stage. Waiting for its cue. The curtain will not come down until it draws pictures of love framed in the memory. It runs along the lines of smiles remembered. It bounces on the knee of hope. It laughs at the days to come.

Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing” James 1:2-3.

Yes, when life tips over, joy spills out. Only joy searches through the rubble to find fragments of beauty, truth, and love. Joy refuses to let them be lost; it knows their value. Knows they are a gift that must be opened.

Joy can’t be bought or stolen; only traded for lesser things. Some days joy feels ransacked. Sort through the turned upside down, inside out, turned over, spilled out places until you find joy. It is there, even when it is hushed and sobered. It is always there. Choose joy.

Stop.

    • Cassi, It’s so true. I hope you find some time this weekend to treasure the things precious to you…and find joy. Thanks for stopping by.

  1. Thanks for letting your joy tip over and spill out here. I love these words. Its one of the best things I have read today. I’m blessed for having stopped by and having some of your joy splashed on me. Blessings.

    • Jessica,
Ah, that’s a high honor for this community. I was thinking after reading some really great posts that maybe joy is too easily expressed in writing and more difficult to live out in life. We should all let it spill out more! Thank you for stopping by. It was great to have you here. Blessings to you!
