There are giants in the land.
Big, scary, threatening giants. Giants that have come to seize our promised land.
Defying giants, looking for a good fight.
Goliath has nothin’ on these giants of pride, deception, and selfishness. These giants are looking for a man—or a woman—who they can overcome and make him or her subject to serve them. They’re in it for the kill.
We peek between the curtains of our hearts to behold with our eyes the voice that causes such quaking. Such fear. Such despair. He shouts his taunts and his words echo through the funeral of our marriage, our hope, or any other place that flourishes in the presence of humility, honesty, and selflessness. The future seems lost. Somehow the giant’s fighting words require no threat of weapons—All he must do is open his mouth and we feel the breath of life sucked right dry from us.
The spirit of Eliab tries to call our attention away from the giants. “That giant is too big. Let me pick on you. You’re more my size. I’ll size up my manhood by sending the little brother running home to daddy.” And brother fights against brother, and sister gossips against sister, while the giants of pride and envy lick their index fingers and victoriously sky-write a tally point in their column.
There are giants in the land and we are losing heart.
How long will we let them lounge on the lawn in our Adirondack chairs, drinking our beer, relieving themselves in our gardens? Isn’t it time we got good and offended that they are on our property? Why do we let them stand outside the doors of our families, our churches, and our communities?
How long will we tolerate the giants? At what cost are you willing to keep sneaking around them in the shadows, hoping not to trip and tumble onto the battlefield?
There are giants in the land. Who will take up the honor and the power of the Lord? We don’t need warriors—we just need simple, trusting shepherds who will care that the sheep are losing heart and will pick up stones of faith, courage, humility, honesty, and selflessness. We need to slay the giants and drive their armies from our land.
There are giants in the land. What will you do about them today: Fear or Fight?
“You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will hand you over to me, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head…and the whole earth will know that there is a God in Israel…It is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.” ~I Samuel 17:45-47
