Racing Free {#31 Days} {Five Minute Friday}

It’s hard to run when you’ve got the devil on your back.

So life becomes a race to nowhere. It’s just the same old story being told in repeatable, shameful ways. Today is just another tired, weary lap around yesterday. Blister upon blister from steps leading to ever-deepening no-way out places.

And the devil on your back says, “I told you so. You’re never getting out of this life.” And your muscles ache and your heart breaks on that rat wheel of despair.

There’s the woman caught in the bed she’d made. I don’t know how many times. Maybe once, maybe 1,000 or more. It doesn’t matter. Not anymore, because she’s trapped now. No place to run. She’s got fingers pointing all around. There’s only one way out, but it’s blocked by a guy drawing in the dirt. He’s in no hurry to move. Thoughts go racing through her head. Whizzing by so quickly, the whole scene becoming a blur.

The guy stands. Says something she can’t quite understand. Something about “sin” and stones.” He sits back down. The men walk away. She just stands there, in silence. Stunned and waiting.

“Go your way.” She hears him say. He says it like he means it, no strings attached. Go. Be free. The devil’s off your back. You can run.

I imagine her racing away to a life she never imagined. Free.

Free indeed!

This month I’m participating with The Nester in her 31 Day challenge to write every day on a topic of choice. I’m writing this month on how Jesus make us free. Because without him, we’re just a hot mess of a captive. Today I’m also linking up with Lisa Jo for her Five Minute Friday writing challenge. You can hop over there to see what others have to say about ‘race.’
